Old Mission Santa Barbara. Founded in 1786 by Franciscan friars, the "Queen of the Missions" is the only California mission continuously operated by the Franciscan Order since its founding. Twin bell towers rise above lush gardens with sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse. This 1929 Spanish-Moorish masterpiece — a National Historic Landmark — dazzles with hand-painted murals, intricate tile mosaics, and graceful archways. Climb the El Mirador clock tower for a free 360-degree panorama of red-tile rooftops, mountains, and ocean.
Stearns Wharf. California's oldest working wharf (1872) stretches 2,300 feet into the harbor and anchors Santa Barbara's waterfront. Stroll past seafood shacks, the Museum of Natural History Sea Center with its live shark touch tank, and a bait-and-tackle shop at the end of the pier.
Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail & the Funk Zone. More than 20 tasting rooms are clustered within a walkable 10-block arts district of converted warehouses, murals, galleries, and farm-to-table restaurants — the only place in wine country where you can do serious tasting without ever getting in a car.
Channel Islands National Park. Five wild islands 22 miles offshore protect 145 species found nowhere else on Earth — including the diminutive island fox — plus kelp forests ideal for snorkeling and diving. Day trips by concessionaire boat depart from Ventura Harbor and are bookable through the National Park Service.
Whale Watching in the Santa Barbara Channel. The Santa Barbara Channel is one of the world's richest cetacean corridors, now designated a Whale Heritage Area. Pacific gray whales migrate through in winter and spring; massive blue whales and humpbacks feed close inshore from late spring through early fall.
Inspiration Point Trail. This 3.4-mile out-and-back from the Tunnel Road trailhead climbs nearly 1,000 feet through Los Padres National Forest chaparral, rewarding hikers with a panoramic sweep of the city, coastline, and Channel Islands. One of Santa Barbara's most beloved and accessible mountain hikes.
Ganna Walska Lotusland. A 37-acre botanical estate in Montecito housing over 3,000 plant species, many rare or endangered, assembled by eccentric opera singer Ganna Walska over decades. Advance reservations are required and spots sell out early — book well ahead.
